Campaign underway to provide famine relief in the Horn of Africa

By Michael Ireland

PALMER LAKE, COLORADO (ANS) -- Three Horn of Africa nations -- Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia -- have been ravaged by a famine brought on by the worst drought in 60 years.

Already 30,000 Somali children have died from malnutrition, and families have fled to Ethiopia and Kenya in search of food. In all, there are 13 million people in need of help.

Now, Humanitarian International Services Group (HISG) is joining organizations from 24 countries in a worldwide campaign to help people suffering from famine in the Horn of Africa.
The International Disaster Response Network Africa Response campaign began December 11, 2011 to raise money for short-term relief and long-term assistance for the people of these affected countries.

The IDRN is a collection of organizations and individuals who are committed to work together in preparation, training and response when significant international disaster events occur.
HISG says in a media release that the group has already shipped more than 800,000 meals, and purchased local food supplies to distribute among the affected communities. These meals will serve as an immediate answer to the food shortage.

HISG is also working with teams of physicians who will rotate into Kenya, treating diseases and teaching healthy nutrition. Finally, the Colorado-based organization has a Kenya office that will assist with agriculture and irrigation projects that will give the region a more stable food supply in the future.

“Through immediate, effective relief and long-term, local solutions, we are in a position to reverse the course of a disaster that has affected millions of people in Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia! The IDRN Africa Response initiative provides a benchmark for how much can be accomplished when people unite under a common cause!” said Mike McCausland, HISG Executive Director.

The IDRN Africa Response campaign will provide financial support for these efforts. People who wish to contribute can give through text message by texting “ACTNOW” to 48510, or through online donations at www.HISG.org  and www.facebook.com/HISGroup  .
