Monk's Tale: Way Stations on the Journey
by Edward A. Malloy, C.S.C.
Notre Dame, IN—"The image of ‘Way Stations' is intended to convey that who I am as a person and the way my life has unfolded is not reducible to any one role that I have played or any particular set of experiences that I have enjoyed . . . What I did after joining the Notre Dame faculty, how I prepared for the post to which I was elected, and what else I did during these years is the subject of this second volume."So Father Malloy writes in the prologue to Monk's Tale: Way Stations on the Journey, the second volume of his projected three-volume memoir. He describes his day-to-day responsibilities and the challenges they presented as well as the ways in which his travel away from campus gave him a broader view of the opportunities and issues facing higher education. We learn of his many commitments as a teacher, administrator, and pastor; as a staff person in an undergraduate residence hall where he still resides; and as a board member in a wide variety of not-for-profit organizations. Father Malloy's humanity and desire to connect with those around him are on ample display: he tells of hosting his annual "Monk's March" around campus for fitness; his passion for basketball; and his advocacy of volunteerism that stamps the ethos of the university to this day.
Of special interest is Malloy's description of his fifteen years participating in the process that led to Ex corde Ecclesiae, Pope John Paul II's apostolic letter on Catholic higher education. Malloy's insider's view reveals the dynamics among the various contingents entrusted with contributing to the document. As J. Donald Monan, S.J. (Boston College) has commented: "Monk Malloy makes his thoughtful and remarkably detailed account of his early priestly years at Notre Dame the perfect foil for his candid, forceful, and long-needed reflection on the writing and application of Ex Corde Ecclesiae to America's Catholic colleges and universities."
Disarming in its honesty, laced with anecdotes, and enhanced with photographs, Monk's Tale: Way Stations on the Journey captures the personality and tenacity of a young priest as he assumes ever greater responsibilities on a path toward the presidency of Notre Dame.
Edward A. "Monk" Malloy, C.S.C., is president emeritus of the University of Notre Dame, where he served from 1987 to 2005 as the sixteenth president and where he is currently professor of theology. He serves on the board of directors of a number of universities and national organizations and is the recipient of numerous honorary degrees.
